Scarecrow Prize Award

Eco NewsPosted by Miss Carruthers Tue, December 11, 2018 02:39PM

We won the Best Teamwork prize in the Scarecrow competition at Garden Show Ireland in May for "Bird Man". A group of ECO club members went to Greenmount to collect the prize. They got to choose a tree, which will replace the fallen oak tree at the perimeter fence, and to create a planter using violas and primulas. They chose some lovely colours and the pot is in the small garden at the front of the school.

Well Done Jack!

Jack decided to write a letter to Blue Peter highlighting all the wonderful Eco activities we do in school. He was awarded a Green Blue Peter Badge which are especially for Blue Peter viewers who care about the environment and nature! Well done Jack for writing a great letter!

Findley, Abbie, James and Erin came with me today to Greenmount to collect our prize for the scarecrow we entered into the Garden Show last June.

We had made a scarecrow using only plastic bottles. It is now in our Outdoor classroom. It won the best scarecrow in the Eco section.

So we need to start thinking about what we can make for the competition next year.

We had a great time at CAFRE. We all received a very informative book about planting and growing our own food by Jilly Dougan.

The children had to create a Planter with Ivy and Cyclamen. We will need to remember to water it!

The school also received a Horse Chestnut Tree, a Clematis and a Cornus or Dogwood, which we will need to get planted out fairly soon.

Thanks again to all the people at Greenmount College who looked after us so well this year.

Primary 3 have been very busy planting sunflower seeds. They all know that the seed needs, water, sunlight and warmth to grow. The children will take their plant home over Easter- good luck!!!
